Three Tasmanian Masters swimmers made waves on the world stage this weekend, competing at the World Aquatics Open Water Championships held at the scenic Palawan Green off Singapore’s Sentosa Island. Representing Tasmania with grit and determination were Anne Henderson (Hobart Aquatic Club), Jayde Richardson (Hobart Dolphins), and Maciej Slugocki (Tomatoes Swim), each taking on the challenging 3km open water course against some of the best Masters swimmers globally. |
Tasmania’s support rippled across the globe as Henderson and Richardson kicked off the competition with outstanding performances in their divisions. Anne Henderson powered to an impressive 5th place finish, while Jayde Richardson finished with a strong 9th place, both securing coveted Top Ten rankings in their respective categories.
The course proved no easy feat. Athletes faced relentless swell from passing boats, rebounding waves off the sea wall, and an unforgiving sprint to the finish chute — a true test of endurance, technique, and resilience.
Veteran swimmer Maciej Slugocki took to the water the following day and delivered a spectacular result, claiming World Champion status in the Men’s 70–74 3km Open Water Swim. A decorated Masters swimmer with a long list of accolades — including past world titles and numerous state and national records — Slugocki added another crown to his impressive career. His victory brought pride and even a few happy tears from the Tasmanian contingent in Singapore.
“It’s cold and wet back home in Hobart,” said a representative from Masters Swimming Tasmania, “but these results have brought us all a bit of sunshine. We are beyond proud.”
The weekend marked not only athletic excellence but also the spirit of camaraderie and passion that defines Masters swimming. From pre-race nerves to podium finishes, Tasmania’s representatives showcased the very best of what it means to compete with heart.
Congratulations to Anne, Jayde, and Maciej — your achievements have inspired the entire Tasmanian swimming community and beyond.
