2024 SCLD Championships – Read Report HERE

MST SCLD Championships

27 swimmers made the journey north for the MST 29th Short Course Long Distance Championships on Saturday, 18 May 2024 at the Launceston Aquatic Centre. It was a chilly day outside but inside it was warm, welcoming and we had a lot of fun. Yes, really we did. Even though this event sounds a bit scary everyone is in the same boat – we all quake and worry about whether we’ll make the distances, but we do – and it always feels good at the end.

There were some fine performances recorded. Branch records broken and/or set included:

  • Lucy Cochrane (TDP): 1500, 800 and 400 Breast, and 800 Back
  • Tony Forman (TAC): 1500, 800, 400, 200 and 100 Free
  • Amanda Duggan (THB): 800 Back
  • Fiona Redgrove (THB): 400 Breast and 400 IM
  • Megan Stronach (THB): 1500, 800 and 400 Back
  • Steve Richards (THB): 800 IM and 800 Back
  • James Belstead (THV): 1500, 800 and 400 Breast
  • Ruth Timperon (TLC): 400 Back
  • Lou Hill (TTL): 800 Fly
  • Maciej Slugocki (TTS): 1500 Free

The standout performance was Fiona’s 400 Breaststroke. Her time broke a 22-year-old record, set back in 2002 by Sue Mayne. Sue is MST’s most prolific record breaker – with something like 365 individual records to her name over a long career. The fact that Sue’s records have stood so long is testament to their quality – so, good job Fiona!!

Thank you to all who helped make this a fun session. For this meet, we were joined by Lee-Anne Edmunds from Swimming Tasmania who was our Chief Referee. Kay Bailey (TLC) was Meet Director, and a big shout out to President Adrienne and all the Launceston Lemmings for their hard work and warm hospitality.
